Introduction to Woodblock Printing

3-week course: Tuesday nights, April 30, May 7, May 14, 7pm – 9pm
Materials are provided. You will learn the basics of carving a wood block and printing by hand in colour
using both reductive and multiple-block methods, and will leave the class with a small edition of completed prints.
Cost: $60.00

Beginning Bookbinding: Coptic Binding

Tuesday, May 21, 7pm – 9:30pm
Coptic Binding, originating in Egypt, is a method in which folded sections of pages are sewn together to create a
decorative chain stitch across the exposed spine between rigid covers. This is an ideal method for binding albums
and sketchbooks, as the book can be laid open entirely flat. Materials and an instruction kit are provided, and you
will leave the class with a completed book. Cost: $30.00

Introduction to Trace Monotype

Tuesday, June 4, 7pm – 9:30pm
Trace monotype is a direct transfer method of printmaking that creates a one-of-a-kind printed image entirely by hand.
It uses minimal space and tools and can be done at your kitchen table, yet produces a complex layering of rich,
atmospheric marks. Cost: $30.00

Monthly Portrait Circle

Love drawing, hate hiring models? Tired of trying to surreptitiously draw strangers in public when they just won’t stop moving?
Join us for a monthly Portrait Circle at Back Room Gallery! It’s a free of charge, casual gathering of artists of all ages and
skill levels who take turns drawing each other’s portraits. Portrait Circle happens on the third Thursday of every month from 7 to 9pm
at Back Room Gallery.

Feel free to drop in, hang out, and fill those sketchbooks!

Please bring your own sketchbooks, drawing boards and drawing materials. We won’t really be set up for painting, so dry materials only
please (but feel free to bring primed canvases to sketch on to kick start those paintings for later!).

Upcoming Portrait Circle dates: Thursday May 16, 7-9pm and Thursday June 20, 7-9pm.
